Abbazia di Santa Giustina
The abbey basilica of Santa Giustina is an important Catholic place of worship in Padua, located in Prato della Valle.
Before the year 1000, the adjoining monastery was a place of worship at first under episcopal dependence and was then entrusted to a community of Benedictine monks who made it into an important abbey.
In the 15th century it was the seat of the great reform of Abbot Ludovico Barbo, which led to the founding of the Cassinese Congregation.
Until the Napoleonic suppressions it was one of the greatest abbeys of Christendom, and the basilica, rebuilt in the 16th century, is still one of the largest buildings in the world. The entire complex is the property of the Italian State.
Inside, besides the celebrated works by Paolo Veronese, Sebastiano Ricci and the Corbarelli family, are venerated the distinguished relics of the Holy Innocents, Saint Luke the Evangelist, Saint Matthias the Apostle, Saint Prosdocimus, Saint Felicity, Saint Julian, Saint Urio, Saint Arnald, Saint Maximus and of the patron saint, Justina.
Pope Pius X raised it to the title of Minor Basilica. (source: wikipedia)
